What We Don’t Like
TaoTronics is no stranger to good audio delivered in compact packages. Their TT-SK06 represents a culmination of their experience, skills and engineering solutions. Because of that, it’s one of the best Bluetooth speakers under $50 on the market.
The design department at TaoTronics isn’t known for going off the deep end. At least not in most of the cases. However, they seem to have a talent of merging practical shapes with aesthetically attractive solutions. TT-SK06 is a very good example of what that means in practice.
The first thing you will notice about it is the aluminum body. It’s not brushed aluminum texture on a plastic surface, but an actual aluminum case. The grille covers the front of the speaker and wraps around to both sides, while all of the controls are on top where they are easily accessible.
There are two very interesting details to notice on this speaker. First, it sits on a buffer stand which helps a lot to eliminate any vibrations. Now, it is a smaller stand, but the stability of the speaker is still pretty good. The other detail is the bass port in the back. That’s right, you have a flat bass port.
If you were to open up the TT-SK06, you would see two full range drivers in behind that grille. These are spaced on each corner of the speaker. If our mention of a bass port got you excited, we have some good and some bad news. There is no actual woofer transducer in this Bluetooth speaker.
Instead, you get a passive woofer which channels low-end frequencies from those drivers straight into the port. Power output we are looking at here is 20 Watts combined. That is a lot more than most Bluetooth speakers in this price range can offer.
In terms of connectivity, you have the option of using the Bluetooth v4.0, a standard AUX cable or a Micro USB cable. The battery of choice is a beefy 5200mAh unit that offers some 6 hours of continuous use at moderate volume. Naturally, move volume equals shorter battery life.
When it comes to overall performance and sound quality, we have to give TaoTronics some praise. That passive woofer really does add a subtle but still noticeable amount of bass. You won’t be feeling any 808s in your chest, but the sound stage in front of the speaker does come across as complete.
The range of Bluetooth connection is 33 feet, making it a decent choice for outdoor use as well as indoor applications. Being a 20 Watt speaker, it is fair to say that you have more than enough power at your disposal. TT-SK06 can comfortably saturate a smaller to medium sized room with a reasonably detailed sound.
If we had to find a single flaw with this design, it would be the battery life. At 6 hours, it falls behind most of its immediate competition. However, that is a direct byproduct of higher power output.
TaoTronics TT-SK06 is by far one of the most refined looking, as well as sounding Bluetooth speakers on the market. Aside from its shorter than average battery life, this speaker offers a variety of great features and solutions.
