Yamaha NTX700 Review – Classical in its DNA

AudioRumble rating 84/100

  • Comfortable guitar to play.

  • Excellent electronics with plenty of tone shaping control.

  • Three different finishes to choose from.

  • No case included with the price of the guitar.

  • Classical sized guitar may feel uncomfortable to electric players.

In the strictest of terms the NTX700 by Yamaha is not a classical guitar, but it feels like one. It has many features that will appeal to players who usually don’t play classical guitars. Which is both its strength and its weakness.

The NTX700 by Yamaha is an acoustic/electric nylon string guitar. It has a contemporary style body that is based loosely on traditional classical style with a cutaway. The body is very thin at 80-90mm (3.1-3.5”) making it very comfortable for the electric player making the move to nylon acoustic. The top is solid spruce with bracing specially designed for the NTX line. It has laminate nato back and sides. The top and back of the body is bound in black with matching heel cap.

The neck is nato with a rosewood fingerboard. No inlays on the fingerboard, which is very reminiscent of a classical. There are side dots though to help navigate the neck. The nut has a width of 48mm (1.9”), which is slightly smaller than a typical classical. The three piece neck joins to the body at the 14th fret.

The soundhole is elliptical in shape, which allows the neck to sport 22 frets. The rosette is inlaid wood with a little abalone to make it pop. The bridge is made of rosewood and is a typical tie style of a classical guitar. The scale length is 650mm (25.6“).

The slotted headstock has a rosewood veneer. There are standard classical style tuning machines that are chrome plated with amber colored buttons. It has two strap buttons already installed.

The top of the guitar has been treated with Yamaha’s A.R.E. (Acoustic Resonance Enhancement). This is a process that uses precise control of temperature, humidity, and atmosphere pressure, to create a top that sounds like that of a vintage guitar. Spruce tops sound better with age, but the NTX700 should sound that good now.

The NTX700 comes in three different colors, which are: Natural, Sandburst, and Black. It has a high gloss polyurethane finish that is hand rubbed.

The electronics are Yamaha’s System61 and 2way A.R.T. pickup. There is a 3-band EQ, onboard tuner, and individual volumes for the treble and bass side of the pickup. The 2way pickup acts like two separate pickups one for the treble register and one for the bass register. There is also a battery indicator light to let you know how much life your battery has.

The case is sold separately.

The look of the NTX700 is very contemporary, but it feels very classical. The neck is almost as wide as a standard classical neck even if it has a thinner depth. If you are uncomfortable playing a classical, then this guitar might not be the right choice for you. The look of the sandburst is my favorite of the finishes, it blends real nice into the nato sides. It is a very comfortable guitar to play, but there is a bit of neck dive.

The tone is warm with lows that are a bit unfocused. It does not have the snap of a standard classical, but that can be chalked up to the body depth.

The thinner body does not project as well as a standard sized acoustic guitar. That should not be a problem since this guitar was designed to be plugged in. The electronics are very good and translate the tone very well, while giving you plenty of tone shaping capabilities. I don’t like where the battery door is located on the upper bout, there are less conspicuous places to have put it.

Our Final Verdict

Yamaha NTX700 Review – Classical in its DNA The NTX700 might not have gone far enough away from the classical to pull in the curious electric and steel-string players. It also may have gone too far away to attract any classical players.
