With Ibanez’s RG450DX you get an awesome electric guitar that’s truly built to rock, without breaking the bank. Sleek looks, mega sound, solid electronics, and great fun to play – what’s not to love?
Plainly put, this is a beautiful guitar – simple, sharp and bold, and instantly recognizable as part of Ibanez’s famous RG series.
The RG450DX has a solid basswood body, with wide double cutaways allowing great access to the neck. On all color variations – White, Starlight Blue and Deep Violet – there’s an eye-catching pearloid pickguard to catch those scratches.
While the body stands out, the neck is where this guitar’s construction shines. It has a bolt-on Wizard III neck, which is made from maple and cut to a flat and thin modern D-shape. The rosewood fretboard has 24 jumbo frets, as well as some pretty cool sharktooth inlays that fit the edgy style well. It’s fast, frantic and fantastic for string bends.
The maple headstock matches the body color and features a big Ibanez logo and standard Ibanez black tuners – not that you’ll really need to deal with them much due to the locking nut, but it’s good to know they are there.
There’s no shortage of sound thanks to the three hefty pickups on this bad boy. The RG450DX has two Ibanez-designed Quantum ceramic humbuckers at the neck and the bridge, along with a Quantum alnico single-coil pickup sitting in between them.
Needless to say, these three – along with a five-way selector switch – give you a great selection of sounds and tones to play around with. You’ll also find a master volume and tone control knob on the pickguard – made of black chrome they feel solid and very responsive.
Finally for hardware the Edge-Zero II Tremolo bridge is excellent. Combined with the locking nut, your sustain is great and tuning is very stable, no matter how much you are using the tremolo arm.
This guitar really is a joy to play, especially when it comes to playing rock, metal and punk. Whether chugging along to some punk-rock powerchords or handling Steve Vai solos, it all seems effortless.
Both humbuckers provide some meaty tones and plenty of aggression, although remain crisp and clear with no mud or excess bass. Meanwhile the middle single-coil pickup is certainly capable of producing some warmer clean tones. The pickups perhaps aren’t as loud as they could be, but with a decent amp volume really isn’t going to be a problem with practicing, recording or gigging.
The Wizard III neck is excellent and really is a joy to hold – solid and fast, and perfect for all kind of rock playing. In all this is a great choice for any guitarist; whether playing rhythm or lead, a beginner or experienced shredder. It shows superb craftsmanship and is generally hard to find a fault.
